Machiel (along with Appache) is the most planted early summer variety in the Benelux area of Belgium. Machiels is also sensitive to bruising on grading machines. Some growers use graders and others grade by hand. Machiels has a very short storage life. Straight from the tree these are a delicious apple to eat.
